Episode 1: Social Security

After reading this week’s posted content and listening to this week’s episode of the Fly on the Wall Project, carefully consider the following questions and choose one to answer in its entirety.

Each question may be answered by only 3 students. It is your responsibility to check all posts and select a question which has not already been answered by 3 of your peers. Please include the number of the question you are answering in the subject line of your post so the rest of the class may easily identify which questions have been answered.

Remember, you must have reviewed the week’s content in order to adequately participate in the Discussion Forum. In your post, incorporate the content into your response where applicable, and consider the principles of the Community Support System (CSS) model (e.g. flexibility; special needs, such as jail diversion; accountability; coordination) and the functions of Case Management (i.e. assessment, planning, linking, monitoring, evaluating) when posting your response.

Your initial response is due by end of the day Thurs 9/29/16.

Comments to at least two of your classmates due by end of the day Sunday 10/2/16

  1. What documents will Michela need to bring to Social Security with her the first time she applies for SSI? What will happen if she doesn’t bring everything she needs to the appointment? Do you think the appointment will be successful? Why or why not?
  2. Describe where you think Michela is at in terms of her current stage of change. How do you see Derek attempting to influence/impact her stage of change, if at all?
  3. There exists a variety of Work Incentive offered through the Social Security Administration. Some are applicable to both SSDI and SSI and some to either SSDI or SSI. Which of the Work Incentives applies to Mick’s situation? Briefly explain the Work Incentive and support the application of such to the information you know about Mick’s case.
  4. Mick has recently received correspondence from both the Social Security Administration as well as private attorneys. How might you assist Mick in reviewing those letters and determining how best to respond? Will Mick require legal representation for the re-payment of monies owed to SSA? What other variables are involved in this situation?
