Episode 7: Friends, Family & Peer Support

After reading this week’s posted content and listening to this week’s episode of the Fly on the Wall Project, carefully consider the following questions and choose one to answer in its entirety.

Each question may be answered by only 3 students. It is your responsibility to check all posts and select a question which has not already been answered by 3 of your peers. Please include the number of the question you are answering in the subject line of your post so the rest of the class may easily identify which questions have been answered.

Remember, you must have reviewed the week’s content in order to adequately participate in the Discussion Forum. In your post, incorporate the content into your response where applicable, and consider the principles of the Community Support System (CSS) model (e.g. flexibility; special needs, such as jail diversion; accountability; coordination) and the functions of Case Management (i.e. assessment, planning, linking, monitoring, evaluating) when posting your response.

Your initial response is due by end of the day Thurs 11/10/16.

Comments to at just one of your classmates due by end of the day Sunday 11/13/16 instead of the usual two comments, just for this week as you also finish up the Site Visit Assignments.

  1. What are some other options for Mick in terms of finding male supports that are invested in his recovery to talk about his issues? Give at least two places he might be able to find this kind of support in the community. What would you suggest he say to Bianca when he goes out to meet with one of these supports if he asked for your advice?
  2. How might Adam, the peer specialist on the team, work with Mick that is different than how Derek or LueAnn work with him? Relate it to info you learned this week about the outcomes of peer support on people receiving services. If Mick wishes to talk to somebody with Bianca about their decision to have a baby, what family support options in the community could you recommend for them?
  3. How would you approach Michela in the meeting that they have scheduled if you were Derek regarding her decision to enroll in college? How would you bring up her housing issues that she does not seem to want to address? What concerns, if any, would you have about the news of her new boyfriend so quickly after dumping Max, and her desire to involve him in her treatment so soon?
  4. George will be returning to his old apartment building to be near his friends. What dimensions of wellness does this move support? Describe three of them. What would you suggest in terms of helping him remain in contact with his new lady friend Kimberly?
